Four Kingdoms. No Heir. An Uncertain Future.
After an evil curse is cast upon the four corners of Syracuse, a vast country ruled by the Rothhaven family, maidens across the land suddenly become barren.
Years pass, and the future of Family Rothhaven looks bleak, until eighteen-year-old Mariselle Langer wakes up one morning with cramps, a craving for chocolate, and a highly unexpected visit from Aunt Flow.
Upon realizing that his daughter is different from the other maidens, Mariselle’s father approaches the leaders of the four kingdoms with the wonderful news. This sets off a chain of events which threaten to divide the Rothhaven brothers, who all desire her for themselves, and not just because she can give them an heir.
Meanwhile, Mariselle has her own ideas about whom she wishes to wed, which not only shocks the nation, but ultimately… saves it.

I picked up this book because it sounded interesting. What I didn't know was that more than half the book was going to be the story of how the curse came to be. This book is advertised as reverse harem but we don't get anything harem related at all.

The first and only sex scene comes at about 90% of the book and it's only with one of the brothers. I know this is a trilogy and the story will continue in the next two books but if you are advertising a book having some elements then for Christ's sake put those elements in the book.

Aside from that this is supposedly a re-edited version of a previous book but this book too needed a lot of editing. There were a lot of grammar issues. And now I need to read the other two books to find out how this ends? Insert eye roll here!

Grace's Mail Order Husband
by Kate Whitsby
Series: Texas Prairie Brides (#1)

Genre: Historical Romance
Format: Audiobook

Grace Montgomery works as a maid at the Double A Ranch in the far north Texas Panhandle. Her life would be happy if not for Florence Abbot, the daughter of Acton Abbot, the wealthy ranch owner. Does Florence really take a special delight in tormenting Grace, or does it only appear that way? The haughty and spoiled prairie princess drives Grace to distraction with her constant complaints and demands. Grace's only friend is Abigail Doering, who rents a cottage on the ranch and gives piano lessons to the pampered Florence and other students from the nearby town of Borger.
Grace's life flies into a whirlwind of chaos, however, when she arranges to marry a mail-order husband. Florence can't stand the idea of Grace getting married when she doesn't even have any prospects. The sons of other wealthy ranchers, whom her father considers worthy matches for her, won't have anything to do with her. They all know her reputation for being demanding and impossible to please.
The worst part, though, comes when Florence finds out that Grace's mail-order groom is none other than Bad Bill Bailey, the notorious gunslinger and accused murderer. Did old Mr. Abbot really give him the job of horse breaker on the ranch, to move in and marry Grace? Florence sets her mind to foil their wedding plans, and to see Bill Bailey put away for good. Will Grace find happiness in this tempest of personalities? Is her new husband really a dangerous outlaw, or is Florence mistaken about his past and his future on the ranch? Will Florence destroy Grace's only chance for love, or will Grace prove everyone wrong by claiming her right to happiness?

I was looking for cowboy reads for a reading challenge and I found this set of books on the digital library (hoopla for those curious people, which I highly recommend) and decided to give it a try. Now mind you I read a lot of "mommy porn" but that doesn't mean I haven't read books that are "clean" romance. I like any kind of read as long as it is well written.

Problem one with this book is that it had too much going on for such a short story. I would have liked it if the author had taken a little more time on the world building and also if she had built on tension. The characters meet that one day the book starts in, get married and the book ends the next day.

Problem number two, Florence. She was such a shallow ungrateful lady. She treated Grace like dirt for no apparent reason and then she threw her out of her house without an explanation.

Next problem is that the book was so predictable it made it unenjoyable since it was such a short read. Add to that the fact that I didn't like the narrator and you have a bomb of a mess in my book.

Like I've mentioned I don't mind the "clean" romance books (I read YA books that have no"porn" in them and I've enjoyed them) but this one was a no-go for me.

Geoff is in the city, living the gay life to the hilt, when his father's death convinces him to return to the family farm. Discovering a young Amish man asleep in his barn, Geoff learns that Eli is spending a year away from the community before accepting baptism into the church. Despite their mutual attraction, Geoff is determined not to become involved with him, but Eli has discovered that Geoff shares his feelings and begins to court him, neatly capturing first Geoff's attention and then his heart.
Their budding relationship is threatened by closed-minded, gossipy relatives and the society at large, a whole new world to Eli, and he must decide whether to return to the community, his family, and the world and future he knows or to stay with Geoff and have faith in the power of love.

I started this book loving the story but as it went on I started to lose enthusiasm. I liked that it was told on 3rd person POV and that it got us started with a little background story in Goeff. I loved the fact that it wasn't insta love (nothing wrong with that but most books have it) and that it took many months for the characters to act on their attraction.

I started to lose hope in this book when it took too long for them to act on their attraction. They had meaningful kisses, explosive kisses even, that were orgasmic as the author described them and then...nothing. No heavy petting, no rubbing, nothing. It took until after 60% of the book for something to actually happen and then it was just once or twice and then the book was done.

Also, there was the fact that the author kept writing that Eli "vibrated". It always made me think of BOB. Seriously just say he shivered or something. He's not a cat!

I liked the story and I found some interesting things in it but please I need more sexy times and less blah blah time thank you very much.

Shay Morgan has stayed hidden for a long time. Living a reclusive life in Earth’s End, Alaska, she’s as far away as she can get from the trauma of her childhood and the man who hurt her long ago. But terror takes over Shay’s life yet again when an unknown stalker steals away the fragile peace she’s built for herself—targeting not only her but the one man who’s ever managed to get past the walls she’s built around herself.
Elliot Winter has lived through being falsely accused before—it ruined his military career. Now it’s happening all over again. And this time, his accuser is a twisted impostor who’s targeting his ex-girlfriend, Shay. Despite a fierce mutual attraction, Shay and Elliot broke up because Shay couldn’t let her guard down, couldn’t let Elliot in. But now they both need to trust each other to confront a psycho who seems to know all their secrets.

The beginning of this book was really interesting but as the story progressed I got more and more annoyed by the repetitiveness of what was going on and how much of a wimp Shay sounded.

Shay wants to find the person trying to steal her identity and after so many discovered clues she's still looking for more evidence.

I liked the mystery behind her situation and her background story. It touched me and in my opinion, shed some light on what victims of abuse might feel and in part I understand why she was the way she was but it made it hard for me to connect with her as a character and made it hard also to see the connection to Elliot.

This is my first Shiloh Walker novel and I have to say it might be a while before I pick another of her books (if ever).

Why couldn't Shadow have stayed away?
Rancher Grey Wilson has fought hard to rebuild his life in the ten years since that horrible night she left, the night their love, their families, their whole town was torn apart by tragedy. And he's almost succeeded. But now that Shadow Moran is back in Barren, everything seems to be going wrong. The family ranch his father entrusted to him is struggling. Worse, Shadow still blames him for what happened that night, and Grey's starting to have his own doubts about his innocence. Then Shadow reveals a secret that shakes him to his core…

Disclaimer:

This copy was provided via NetGalley for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of it or the content of my review.

I am in love with cowboys (at least the ones in books) and when I saw this one on NetGalley I couldn't help myself. I had to give it a go. This is the second book of the Kansas Cowboys miniseries and it can be read as a standalone but it makes you curious about the first book.

Grey has been having troubles with his ranch and with the people of small-town Barren, Kansas because of an accident ten years prior that killed a young man. Even though he was cleared of any wrongdoing he was still blamed for it.

Shadow is the sister of the man that was killed and she was Grey's sweetheart until the shooting. Shortly after the death of her brother Shadow left town and didn't come back for ten years and when she came back was to revealed to Grey some things she's left hidden for so long.

This is like the publisher says a heartwarming story of second chances and forgiveness. But it was a quick read that left me wishing for so much more.

That more that I was looking for includes a better storyline as it was kind of repetitive. Better editing as there were parts where something happens; like Grey taking off his vest; and a paragraph or two later he takes it off again and it is worded the exact same way as the first time you read it.

Other things that bother me where the fact that Shadow and Grey kind of stayed on that time ten years before and sounded young and uncertain and at times annoying.
